This year’s winner, for the second year running, was the UC Press Club with their industry trip. The industry trip to Melbourne provided UC Press Club members with an opportunity to introduce their members to the ways in which the media business works and network with professional contacts.

By visiting Channel 9 Melbourne studios, ABC, SBS, Vice and the Herald Sun, the industry trip was beneficial to the student members as it gave them a real-life experience and sense of what newsrooms are ‘really’ like. Congratulations to the UC Press Club.

PIRaNaS provided a mixture of everything; professional development, academic development, social events and collaborative events with other clubs. They have built even stronger links with government, external industry professionals and private institutions.

Their academic sessions for first year students ranging from essay writing to exam help have provided a platform for their new members to flourish, and have also worked with several stakeholders to attend events such as the Institute for Regional Security’s Career Night, the Future Strategic Leaders Congress, and the Royal United Services Institute Members Dinner.

All of these presented members with the opportunity to connect and engage with high level government and private sector officials, such as the Chief of the Air Force, Secretary of Defence and Director of Intelligence for Australia.

Unsung Hero Award- Callum Johnston; PIRaNaS

Callum has previously held all four positions on the clubs committee in his club and took on the challenge with passion and dedication. He has demonstrated excellent leadership by organising, and then running, study workshops for standout difficult units in his area of study . Callum has also organised and hosted events that included attendance from the Canadian High Commissioner and the former CIA Chief Officer to the US Embassy in Canberra.

He has been credited with almost single handily ensuring the club has gone on to flourish this year, by mentoring new committee members and showing the way when required. Congratulations Callum Johnston from PIRaNaS.

The President of the Year award is to recognise and individual that shows commitment, undivided pride to their club, and goes above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that their club fosters a community of engagement and functionality.

Lion Club Person of the Year Award – Andrew Giumelli; Rotaract Club of the University of Canberra

The winner of the 2018 Lion Club Person of the Year was awarded to Andrew Giumelli from the Rotaract Club of the University of Canberra. Andrew has made an outstanding contribution to his club, the university and the broader community over the course of the year.

Andrew became president of their club earlier in the year, and made an instant impact by doubling the number of events they held. He have empowered and inspired other club members to take on new tasks and challenges – as well as offering their own time generously towards other initiatives such as RU OK Day, Relay for Life and City2Surf .

Undoubtedly, one of his biggest achievements this year was initiating the UC Sleepout – which involved connecting with stakeholders such as the SRC, VCs Office, UniLodge, UCLife, St Vincent de Paul and other clubs on campus.

Through different and creative fundraising ideas his club will be able to support more projects and help more people. I quote from one of his clubs’ members… “His friendly and gentle manner allows for shyer members to be brave enough to step forward – with his leadership style is best described by this quote: ‘Be somebody that make everybody feel like a somebody’.”

The impact he has had on many people around the UC community this year has been nothing short of extraordinary, Congratulations Andrew!
