Come together to demand safety for refugees & asylum seekers imprisoned on Manus & Nauru!
The evidence is overwhelming: Manus Island & Nauru are not safe for refugees. Innocent people, including children, imprisoned by Australian governments have been harrassed, abused, assaulted, even murdered under our watch. It is well past time to bring them here.
In 2014, Reza Berati was killed and scores of other asylum seekers were injured in riots that swept the Manus Island detention centre. In August 2016, the Nauru files confirmed the suspicions we held ever since the torture camps were reopened – more than 2000 leaked incident reports detailed the horrors and abuses of the detention centre over a two year period up to October 2015. More than half of these incident reports involved children. This year, 9 people were injured in the Good Friday Shooting when PNG military forces opened fire upon the detainees, which Peter Dutton shamefully blamed upon the conduct of asylum seekers.
Peter Dutton has also launched an extraordinary campaign to force people into even more danger. Manus Island detention centre is due to close on October 31, with no contingency for refugees who have nowhere else to go and who are being given next to no assistance integrating into a community already struggling with poverty. Dutton has also tried to deport 400 asylum seekers living in Australia back to these horrendously unsafe conditions.
We are callling on the government to end this farce. The idea that you can save lives by inflicting torture, death and despair on a small group of innocents is ludicrous and at odds with everything Australians should stand for. We demand all the refugees and asylum seekers on Manus & Nauru be brought to Australia immediately. Bring them here now!
