This year was a memorable one for the University of Canberra Redbacks Netball Club.
Not only did the club have a staggering eight teams competing within five divisions of the North Canberra Netball Competition, but they also claimed the coveted title of Sports Club of the Year at the inaugural UC Sports Awards.
The award was based off the hard work of their 13 member committee who ensured all events were organised and executed flawlessly, and also developed a club culture that people wanted to be a part of. This was evident in the fact that the team’s membership numbers reached a new high of 150.
On the court the team experienced a wide range of results.
The Division 4 UC Roses won their competition after finishing third on the ladder and eventually beat minor premiers the INNC Jaguars in the grand final 31 to 29.
In the Division 5 preliminary final, it was an all UC affair with the second placed Shekranes taking on the Calypso for a place in the decider.
Although they finished one place behind their UC affiliates, the Calypso earned their spot in the grand final with a 30 to 22 win.
However, the UC Calypso went down in the last game of the year 28 to 49 against GNC Topaz.
The UC Sunshine also joined the Shekranes and Calypso in Division 5 but finished the season in fifth place.
Division 1’s UC Diamonds missed out on the finals by one place after coming fifth, while the Division 2 UC Silver Ferns made it to the semi-finals.
The UC Pearls fell one win short of making the Division 3 finals despite being the second highest scoring team in the competition.
The UC Roses Division 4 counterparts, the UC Gems finished their season in seventh place.
Regardless of which way the results went for the UC Redbacks Netball Club, 2016 was a resounding success.
After seven and six years with the club respectively, Kristy McDonald and Julia Katherine will leave the UC Redbacks Netball Club after spearheading the team’s success this season.
Sara Corbett will take the reigns as the President of the club in 2017, while Hayley Teasdale will be her deputy.
